What's going on recently ?

What's going on recently ?? Many times I was granted a double/triple points for the next 10-15 min achieve the requirements and the same min disappeared. Now I had 2 achievements at the same time and got the triple for 30 and it was gone again. After applying for the early bird regard. Same just gone. Not really inspiring is it ????? I want my double triple points back now !!!!! Also I am extremely irritated by the app. specifically after each lesson the flying monkey effect blows my head out

the energy system ruined duolingo

the energy system ruined duolingo, if the hearts were back, all the free users would be able to learn much more and much easier, this new system is just a moneygrab and is absolutely terrible, i have to wait hours to not even be able to complete one single lesson, ridiculous.

Although I agree with most comments re badly designed app, IE sometimes you can hear the words spoken in Greek, which I like, but sometimes its silent. WHY.I do though commend Oscar who sent me an idiots guide to setting my mobile phone to a Greek keyboard in addition to the standard English one.He replied to my e-mail within 10 minutes.

It used to be good...

It used to be good.... but sadly it's lost its old self. it has change from being a fun language learning app to an advertisement center. I do like the new chess feature but the ellos they give you are about 400 higher than your actual ello just to make you feel good.

Overhyped and Underwhelming: The Truth About Duolingo

After trying it seriously, I'm genuinely surprised by how highly it's rated on the official site and app stores. My experience has been mostly frustrating, and it feels like the app prioritizes keeping you hooked over actually teaching you a language effectively.Right from the start, it throws you into lessons where you're basically guessing words instead of properly teaching them. There's little to no clear explanation of vocabulary, grammar rules, or why things work the way they do. You see a word or phrase a few times in context (or out of it), get it wrong, and then it's "oh well, try again", but you still don't really learn it properly. It relies way too much on pattern recognition and multiple-choice guessing rather than building a solid foundation. I felt like I was playing a game of elimination more than learning anything useful. The interface and overall design feel aimed at kindergarten kids rather than general adult users (or even teens). The colorful cartoons, constant animations, exaggerated sound effects, and over-the-top encouragement come across as childish and patronizing. It seems built more for short dopamine hits than meaningful progress. The heavy focus on gamification (streaks, leagues, hearts/energy system, gems, etc.) is clearly designed to boost engagement metrics and keep people coming back daily, but at the expense of effective learning. Lessons become extremely repetitive after a while: the same sentence structures recycled endlessly, tiny variations, and busywork that doesn't build real fluency. It gets boring and frustrating fast, especially when you're penalized for mistakes in ways that feel punitive rather than educational.Overall, it's poorly designed for anyone who wants more than superficial "tourist random phrases." If your goal is actual language acquisition (speaking, understanding, writing), this app falls short and wastes a lot of time. I'm not surprised so many people drop off after the initial novelty wears off.If you're serious about learning a language, I'd look elsewhere (textbooks, other apps with better explanations, or real practice). Duolingo might be fun for a casual five minutes a day, but don't expect real results.. . . Duolingo Feels Like Kindergarten Busywork for Adults.. . .

Duolingo intentionally ignored my feedback and complaint

I came back and forth to use this app for learning languages. The last time I left was because of the harsh words and gaslighting tones they used when reminding players to continue lessons. Not gonna lie, it affected my mental at that time. Then I heard they made upgrades so I installed the app again 40 days ago. Why not give it second try, eh?Long story short, they allowed us free-users to purchase energy boosters in the middle of lessons. The purchase was made using diamonds. I bought this booster once with the diamonds I earned. However, after answering one question, the booster drained back to 0. Worse, my diamonds amount remained the same. Yes, they didn't return the diamonds.I thought it was just a one-time bug only, so I tried making few purchases which unfortunately didn't work too!I filed a complaint to their customer service e-mail, they replied asking for evidence (which I already attached). So I sent again the video record of this bug. Never received any replies since Feb 18.I reached them out on Instagram too but they ignored my messages on DM and post replies. I began to think they are doing this on purpose. With the solid provided proof, I don't understand why they'd not take any action. Either fix it or compensate me for my loss (time and diamonds). Decision is made, I uninstalled the app. When I checked the Google Play review, some experienced the same bug.Imagine if I paid with real money, how much I would have lost. Be careful of spending money here. They don't seem to care about your feedback.

I think Duolingo is the best

I think Duolingo is the best. It encourages me to learn a language and keeps me entertained throughout. This is an incredible app, and I'm so glad I downloaded it 609 days ago!

Nasty, pernicious little app

Nasty, pernicious little app that sends you ever more passive aggressive messages when you haven’t logged in. My teen has it to support her GCSE Spanish (recommended naively by school). It does nothing to further her Spanish but it does message her via notifications and emails constantly if she hasn’t logged in that day. Messages such as: Nobody ignores me…for long. Do your lessons or Duolingo gets weird if you skip a day or Are you procrastinating? Interesting choice (with a sulky, frowning character). There were worse but I deleted the more aggressive ones to be honest. Not the best way to motivate people and it seems it’s just guilt tripping you to have your ‘streak’ and be on your phone more. Be aware for kids and teens.

I love learning a new language on the…

I love learning a new language on the go, from anywhere, as it builds a sense of consistency which is key in learning the language. Duolingo has a streak feature which helps one in maintaining consistency. The down side to this is the emails you keep getting from them. They overload your inbox with emails, I understand the core reason for this feature but it doesn't have to be this aggressive.

Nice supplement to language course

Nice, got me language learning. Really hooked because of my streak. I do this along side a course and I’m not convinced it would be that helpful alone as it barely ever explains concepts, but a nice supplement as gets me to remember vocab.

I used to love Duoling

I used to love Duoling before they swithed to the new energy system, I don’t use it at all anymore. It became very stressful.

I’ve made progress in learning …but it’s going downhill

I’ve made progress in learning with Duolingo. Like some other reviewer I have found it a bit too much like a game at time with its graphics and overall structure. However I was able to learn the basics of the language so that was good. The recent addition of explanations of my mistakes is a great step forward but Duolingo keep moving it towards an even more ‘gamey’ type feel. I’m now bombarded with reward chests to open which add nothing to my ‘paid for’ experience. They have introduced some stupid and ineffective games where characters wander around asking questions and it’s rubbish. Its as if Duolingo have a load of developers sitting around with nothing to do so they invent stupid stuff with no thought to the user experience.I subscribed in 2025 and just renewed, after careful consideration for 2026 and now wish I hadn’t. If this direction of travel continues for the app then I won’t be renewing again. Very frustrating.

Too confusing due to lack of explanations

Spanish was Latin American and not European and, due to the complete lack of any explanations, I gave up on learning Welsh after 9 months, as it became just too confusing.

I tried the maths

I tried the maths, ( I studied maths at degree level), it is a disaster. The explanations are non existent and the exercises completely unvalidated. This is AI having a laugh at humans.

Duo needs to resign

Why cant that fat green bird just leave me alone. In the end I had to delete the app losing all hope, because I had a green bird simping for me when I'm just trying to live my life. Duo needs to resign. He's getting in my head and affecting my mental health by guilt tripping me into doing my duolingo. I'm not happy. Someone give Duo the sack. He's so aggressive like mate just have a day off.

I had three invalidated attempts

I had three invalidated attempts, the first one sayin I didn't scan behind the computer, even if I followed all the instructions, other two because my camera didn't work, even if I saw the camera working at the begining of the test and it's the same camera I use for one hour weekly for my classes with no issues at all. No appeal resource? It doesn't seem fair.

No family oriented

It may be a okay way to learn a language, but it is LGBTQ.Check on the characters. Almost no straight couples. If you have kids.....be aware.

Constant Upselling - Stop it!

As a long-time subscriber to the 'Super' plan I am fed up with the constant push to upgrade to 'Max' at greater cost.First they took away features of Super and moved them to Max. Now reinstated after backlash. Now the app has forced a trial of Max. I am not interested.
