Worst Company Ever…
This has to be the worst experience trying to pay a bill I have ever had. We have been trying to pay medical bills for months. The codes are not correct. The customer service is non-existent. We are at the point where we are giving up and not going to pay the bills. Pardon my language but this Company Sucks!

A patient's pov
From a patient pov: I pay my bills promptly via online banking thru a major bank, and 99% of the time the provider gets a paper check w/in 5 business days. I have two providers who started using Athena. I would get constant (like daily) email a/o text nags for payment that looked like they came from the provider for any new charge but were sent by Athena. At first I responded to nags by emailing back saying, "Paid!" w/bank payment record attached - but the "Payment due!!" nags kept on coming. I tried opening an Athena account to stop the nags but found Athena's software so dysfunctional and its privacy policy so mercenary, I returned to online banking bill pay. It took several complaints directly to providers to make the nags stop.Since the dunning emails appear to come directly from the provider, Athena's obnoxious behavior makes it look like providers assume their patients are deadbeats - not a good look, esp. for psychological services. Athena's obnoxious, aggressive billing tactics reflect badly on providers already tarred by a predatory, broken healthcare system. Providers: You can do better.

This is the second time I have had to use this portal. When the phone rang to give me a code, nothing happened. I received no code. I tried several times. Finally I received the code and the portal said "This is not a valid code". Your website/portal is horrible to try to set up.

Transparency & Truthfulness Matters!
Transparency & Truthfulness Matters!Especially if you are trying to procure new clients for a high-priced system. I approached Athenahealth EHR for a Demo, following which I received a call from a company intake person that took all the info re: our practice, our requirements etc. over almost 30 min on the phone. I was led to believe that the next email I would get would be to schedule the demo.Following the initial detailed intake phone call, I received an email asking me to schedule another meeting with "senior sales analyst" to "Discuss your practice – what’s going well, where there are challenges, what goals you have for the practice/Review athena’s unique partnership model/Discuss and establish next steps" I courteously declined the meeting in reply to email courteously and very clearly explaining the reason for my refusal and my expectation: I had already discussed my needs and my practice specifics and so it would simply be a waste of my time providing the same information all over again not to mention duplication of information and requested a live demo instead where I could actually see the functionality of the system. This is the industry standard for most EHR companies I have contacted------an initial intake phone followed by a demo setup. 2 days after I declined the follow-up phone call I get a call in the morning, in the middle of a patient session from their company representative assuring me that they could schedule a demo meeting that afternoon along with the pricing modules made available at the same time if I was agreeable. I scheduled the meeting based on this reassurance.Come the time for the meeting, first off, the salesperson tells me that he's "not able to hear me!!!", in spite of the system and browser showing repeatedly that the microphone was working just fine." Let's just a few things discuss over the phone and then I can show you the practical side of it on the desktop. We probably won't need the voice function so much for the demo!!!", he says. And guess what? The guy just had me elaborate and repeat all the intake info over the next 45 minutes. THERE WAS NO DEMO. THERE WAS NO DISCUSSION/EXPLANATION OF ANY PRICE MODULES. And when I asked re: moving on to the demo, here is his answer: "Oh, looks like we have already used up almost an hour, so there's really no time left for the demo!! And any way this was a meeting more to know about your practice. I'm going to email you some demo videos so you can review them at your convenience!!"Really? You wasted an hour of my time, lying to me and leading me on to attend this "DEMO" meeting, just to tell me that you were chatting with me and that I could review your emailed "demo videos?" (half of which I probably wouldn't even understand without an in-person explanation of the different functionalities). No wonder, you couldn't "hear me." And then to top it off, he tells me that I would need to share my practice financials in order for them to give me "the most accurate, practice specific quote", and "we can definitely schedule another meeting to go over that". Seriously???!!!So, NO DEMO & NO PRICING MODULES!!!! Just lies and waste of time. So, AthenaHealth, let me tell you how to impress and procure new clients: You impress and procure new clients by NOT LYING TO THEM, by respecting their time constraints, by honoring your word and by NOT LEADING THEM ON. You do not get new clients by the shabby and deplorable behavior your employees demonstrated. This is the worst customer service that I've had the misfortune to come across. Lying and tricking your prospective clients may work in the short run to get them in to your "meetings" but that is no way to create a good impression. Your company may be "the most used EHR company" but it is the worst in customer service. I would neither recommend you nor your services to any of my colleagues. Health information leaves the USA
Just because it’s a dirt cheap platform doesn’t mean it’s good. It is horrible for patients.I realize it’s cheap to use, but doctors should keep our medical info safe, don’t have money for a better system then use a paper chart, don’t give my info away to Athena health. I had to change my phone #They market products and services. Shady doctors use this to cloud share for mutual financial gain. It is importantly to give doctors a google or sideline number so when they give it away you don’t get your real number. Then Athena sends to other places like accu rpm, ccm companies, also for annual wellness exams. These exams are worthless ones.

Website nonfunctional
Website will not advance when I click on the "I am a patient" selection, and keeps asking me if I am a patient. I would rather receive a paper statement and send a check than use this web service. Other medical payment sites are much easier to use and without any issue.

Virtual Care - Athena Health & CVS Minute Clinic
This company provides TeleHealth type services for CVS MinuteClinics Virtual Care across the US. This review is based on that experience. When filling out why you are doing a remote service, they provide 3 vague and subjective options of why you are seeking treament and services. Despite being in the Ai era and not even providing further clarification on their categories anywhere online or in their forms (also including ETC!), when you select a category for the appointment. A requested a basic service, immediately upon entering the virtual program with a doctor, they said they couldn't assist. I immediately said than I shouldn't have to pay, she agreed but said I have to go through billing. The doctor also stated that I needed to go see a Minute Clinic in person. Upon trying to book an in-person with Minute Clinic, they said they don't provide the services the doctor said I needed to go in for. So it was all just a runaround, lots of movement and no progress. Fast forward a few weeks later, I received a bill. Since then, I spent hours on the phone, logins don't work half the time (CVS & Athena sites), I cannot access information half the time online, nobody in billing can help (they refer to an escalation team (setup by state according to them) that never calls or emails), despite each phone representative I spoke with seeing notes in the account (from me and the provider who stated that they provided no services and misinformation), and agreeing that the bill needs to be canceled. The whole telehealth through CVS and Athena service is a money capture event and is a total scam. The virtual Minute Clinic Athena Health service I asked for was easy, simple, and benign, which is why I thought the process would be simple in the first place. They have no interest in providing any Care at any step, just chatting and collecting your data. Data collection appears to be the prime motivation here.

ZERO STARS
ZERO STARS - Their website doesn't work, but it makes you fully re-register every time you want to try. I went through registration about 7 times, each time takes a few minutes, email verification, 2fa to cellphone, and, nothing. At the end only a "code is incorrect" leading to "link expired" leading to starting registration. - Oh, and there's no number to call, no chatbot, nothing. Why do they hide from users? Absolutely horrible
Absolutely horrible! Doctors please don’t use this! I’ve had my account set up multiple times and I can NEVER login. If you call Athena directly they refuse to help even when it is clearly THEIR system that is at fault. I’m in IT so I know what I’m doing and still can’t get their crappy system to work. Can’t get any of my medical information.

Completely worthless
Completely worthless. Worse than not having an online portal at all. I scheduled an appointment and never got a response. I got a notification that I had a message in my account, but logging in I see no message. I messaged again to say this and got no response. This was 1.5 months ago. I guess I have to call my doctor's office to make the appointment, which I would have just done in the first place if the portal was not deceptive.

Horrible
Working with Athena Healthcare was incredibly frustrating and difficult when they did not communicate my insurance claim correctly to my insurance and tried to leave me with the entire bill. It took a year of dozens of calls back and forth, begging for them to reach out and talk to the insurance provider HealthNow (who is also horrible) in order to understand why it was not processed correctly. Each side blamed the other and left me in an endless back and forth to try to get the claim resolved which it eventually was over a year after I went into the urgent care. Every time I called Athena Health they said they would investigate and I should call them back in 6-8 weeks and then I would call again and they would delay it further by putting it back on the insurance provider. They showed absolutely no care at all to resolve the issue. The worst thing I did was pay the bill myself so I didn't get sent to collections and then once I did everyone had even less incentive to help me since everyone had already been paid. Working with Athena health was the absolute worst.

Awful
Awful. They do not follow up on claims and put claims on hold. The worst thing is that they do not forward correspondence to you from CBE from Medicare trying to recover overcharges. As a result, I did not know what was going on and suddenly got hit with a $6,000 bill from the Treasury Department. This happened twice to me. The CBE people told me that it happens often with Athenahealth.DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!! YOU WILL LOSE THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS !!!

Catastrophic Experience With @athenahealth – Small Practices Beware
I signed with @athenahealth in July 2024 after months of demos and referrals. We went live November 19th. Since then, my clinic has endured one of the most disruptive, financially damaging, and exhausting experiences of my career.Claim Failures:No claims sent for the first 6+ weeks due to providers not configured to sign notes.Lab billing delayed more than 10 weeks; even now Athena forces a modifier that causes denials.DME billing delayed 16+ weeks; workflow still broken.Prior authorizations not stored — every claim must be corrected manually.Chiropractic Medicare claims require manual entry of initial treatment date on every visit.Even today, 5 payers’ claims still cannot be sent.False Promises:Sales claimed all lab integrations → only LabCorp, and delayed.Claimed chiropractic macros → none exist.Claimed care plan countdowns → don’t exist.Claimed supplement/product sales with tax → only possible by billing fake insurance claims ($6–$7 fee each).Patient Harm:Patients charged random amounts due to faulty care plan setups.Incorrect statements mailed, emailed, and texted.Lost patients due to destroyed trust.Others constantly complain about redundant reminders.Operational & Financial Chaos:Fee schedule uploaded 3 times, leaving erroneous codes.Sales tax calculated by hand.Nearly 100 support cases opened, with hours on calls and little resolution.Timely filing denials piling up because Athena delays triggered deadlines before claims were even sent.$15,000 paid for an AI workaround just to survive.Athena now demands $1,000–$3,000/month for API access to my own data.Recordings: Athena refuses to release sales/onboarding recordings they promised were kept “for quality purposes,” likely to avoid proof of misrepresentation.👉 Bottom line: If you are a small or independent practice, do not sign with @athenahealth. The cost — financial, operational, and emotional — is catastrophic.#Healthcare #MedicalPractice #IndependentPractice #EMR #Athenahealth #HealthIT #PracticeManagement #PatientCare

Horrible experience
Horrible experience. They provided me a billing code that does not work and it was a nightmare. I wasted so much time trying to see if the billing code would work. This is so inconsiderate.
