I was with Safeco for 2 years
I was with Safeco for 2 years. When their rates went way up, I switched insurance companies. Well, right at my 6 month payment with the new company, all of a sudden there's a collection notice and my credit rating dropped 60 pts (causing my renewal with the new company to go up $150 for the next 6 mos). After investigation it was Safeco who turned me over to collections for non-pymt of insurance premiums!! I never received anything from them via mail, email, text, etc that there was any balance due. Seems way too coincidental that this happened right at the 6 mos renewal with my new company. I was able to straighten it out (seems they didn't cancel my ins until 30 days after I verbally notified them) with Safeco, but not after spending 2-1/2 hours of my time and lots of frustration. I can say I'll never use Liberty Mutual/Safeco again and will make sure I tell everyone I know about my experience.

Safeco insurance is a joke
Safeco insurance is a joke. They make changes without your knowledge. I have had a 1k dollar deductible for years. Now that I make a claim for a leaking water heater. My deductible is 2.500 which i had no clue. I have paid over 3.000 out of pocket. If that's the case why do I need insurance if they don't cover anything and change your coverage without your knowledge or permission

Safeco...beginning of the end of 20 plus years with Liberty Mutual
I had been with Liberty Mutual for decades....and then they became Safeco. The beginning of the end. Costs went up and customer service went down.

*****************AVOID*****************I just cancelled this insurance for motorcycle after 1 year. I noticed my premium jumped 25% without explanation and thought this was unreasonable for a seldom ridden older motorcycle that is not very expensive. When I went online to evaluate my policy I could not find a way to change the coverage so I had to call. When i called it took several minutes to get through automated voice menu to a person , Then I got transferred to 3 people. The last one was helping me make changes to my policy so I could evaluate new changes with a cheaper premium but then began to complain saying "other callers were waiting" !!!! wth!He then said that most people don't want to try different scenarios to see how the price will change or compare with other rates, most people call just to say what changes to make. !After that I told him I didn't appreciate that kind of non-help and attitude and cancelled it.Got progressive insurance which was less and allowed me to do everything online.Safeco is a CSR dumpster fire. *****************AVOID*****************

Safeco employee never asked me questions that caused my policy to be canceled
Safeco canceled my home owners insurance over questions not asked by an employee. When I got a check in the mail saying my policy was canceled and a nightmare. They had no desire to do any rushing to fix of not having mortgage insurance on my home that is financed. I’m switching insurances for both home and auto and would not recommend this company to my worst enemy. I called Saturday and no one could fix the problem they said it would be days before I would know if they would fix the problem. My number was also released to spams when signing up for insurance with them. This business is a nightmare to deal with don’t do it!!!

We are covered, but our rep has denied our claim over and over again throughout fix process... costing us time and money at every turn.
We had a water leak that caused damage to our floors and subfloor. The repairs are 100% covered by our policy. Should be a four week fix, but due to our Liberty Mutual/Safeco Rep named Brenden Jones is unfamiliar with our policy, unresponsive and has tried to deny our claim at multiple points during this now EIGHT MONTH process. We have had to fight him and his team at every turn and remind them that we are covered. We are good paying, honest customers and they are doing everything in their power to slow it down and not finish the job. We have lost the ability to live there for EIGHT MONTHS. It's completely unacceptable and I am disgusted by the level of service (or really lack there of).

Every time we have a glass claim
Every time we have a glass claim, we are told we need to download an app and take pictures of a chip in the windshield! Until I do this, I am told I cannot set a scheduled time to get the damage repaired! Of course, now the starburst in the windshield has the potential to turn into a crack that requires the windshield to be replaced. Meanwhile, I don't receive the required "text," and I am told to call 800-561-0198 to have it resent, only to discover they are closed in the afternoon! Safeco's process and communication for getting a simple glass claim and repair completed are appalling and pathetic! It would seem that after using Safeco for over 30 years and paying them over $5400 a year for insurance, they would provide better service. As their service continues to decline, it appears we need to find another insurance company. Obviously, we do not matter to this company, and after getting the runaround from their phone representatives, they have no interest in us as customers.

Probably the worst customer service experience I've ever had
Had homeowners and auto insurance with Liberty Mutual for 25 years. Liberty Mutual spun off their auto insurance to Safeco. The problems began immediately. I stopped receiving bills and began receiving only past due notices. I spoke to representatives attempting to correct this with no results. I paid the past due notices but they said they didn't receive them even though the bank showed that the payments were cashed. After several months I received notice that they had cancelled my policy. I called and the rude customer service supervisor said that I had signed up for paperless billing which I had not. I switched to another company and will not do business with Liberty Mutual going forward as a result of this bad experience.

10 year customer with Safeco ( Liberty Mutual) home & multiple auto policies. Combined cost of policies 5 years ago= $4,100. 2026 renewals= $9,388. Increase of 229%!! One minor roof leak called in 3 years ago, estimate of $2,000 & with $1,000 deductible, we chose not to make a claim & paid for it. We’re moving on.

Highly Recommend for House Insurance
My wife and I had a house fire that was devastating. I was concerned because of stories I'd heard about others having issues with their insurance claims. Our experience with Safeco was entirely positive. They assisted us from the day of the fire through till when we could return home. They walked us through entire process from the fire mitigation to the reconstruction and working with contractors. The agents were very friendly and supportive and did everything they could to assist within the bounds of what our policy allowed. And prior to the fire, never having really paid much attention to the policy (I am embarrassed to say) my wife and I were pleasantly surprised that it covered most every essential need associated with our loss. We recommend Safeco without reservation.

Incompetent and unresponsive at best!
If I could rate their auto insurance claim department a -10 I would. We were rearended by a driver with Safeco/Liberty Mutual insurance. We filed a claim on 12/16/2025 at which time they assumed fault for the accident. After no less than 30 calls/emails and countless hours of unnecessary time spent, they did absolutely nothing and failed to follow through with the claims process, repairs, car rental, etc. etc. No matter who we spoke with when we could actually get past their bots and incompetent representatives we finally elevated it to a "manager" and the "Office of the President." Sadly they were just as if not more incompetent and inept, along with making numerous false claims. Just one example: Early in the process we were told to rent a car with Enterprise, only to find out they never sent the authorization to the rental car company. We were then told by their management 3 weeks later that we were not eligible for a car rental since "the car was not towed" from the accident. We have it on record, that the car was "unsafe to drive and would present a danger to ourselves and others." Bottom line, it's been 3 weeks and our car is still at the repair shop with no progress made whatsoever by Safeco/Liberty Mutual, while telling us it was fine to drive a mechanically unsafe vehicle. Unfortunately, this was just the tip of the iceburg! I would caution anyone to stay as far away from this company as possible!!

DO NOT USE SAFECO/LIBERTY MUTUAL I have…
DO NOT USE SAFECO/LIBERTY MUTUAL I have filed a complaint with the NC Insurance Commissioner's office.Fighting with adjuster this week over our claim. Car total loss, but they want to pay us below value. If they come up another $1200, i'll settle. Adjuster has also stated that they will start deducting storage fees from our claim - can't do that in NC. He also stated their value will not be negotiated. The adjuster has been rude, condescending and very unpleasant. They only want comps within a 100 mile radius & must include vins. Apparently a comp with picture, year, make & model isn't enough and the adjuster told me he was not going to call all those dealerships and the burden of proof was on me. I have sent them over 35 within a 500 mile radius and still won't negotiate with me. Today I resent those comps with the VINS. I'm sure that won't be acceptable either, he will find another excuse. As soon as possible, will be changing my auto, home & a renter's ins policies to another company. THEY ARE HORRIBLE - I WISH I HAD SEEN THE REVIEWS BEFORE WE OK'D OUR INS AGENT TO GO WITH THEM. REVIEWS: Common Customer Complaints• Denied or Underpaid Claims: Many reviewers report that Safeco denies legitimate claims or offers significantly less money than the actual repair costs. Specific issues include denying water damage claims as "long-term seepage" and lowballing estimates for vehicle repairs.• Poor Customer Service & Communication: Customers frequently mention difficulty reaching agents, long hold times, and unhelpful or rude staff. A lack of communication during the claims process is a recurring theme.

Just say NO to Liberty Mutual/Safeco!
This company is absolutely the worst insurance company I have ever used! We had a fire recently and thought since we were talked into paying more for replacement value when purchasing the policy, our contents would be covered for what it would cost to replace them. They absolutely mislead us because when we made our claim, they came back with just cash value which is all the items that we listed, minus depreciation, which will not cover the cost of replacement at all! Not sure what algorithm they use to come up with depreciation on everything across the board, but we turned in over $170,000 worth of contents and they want to pay us $42,000. After going back and forth over and over, what they tell you is if you go and purchase all the items that were lost and turn in the receipt, they will possibly give you more to help cover replacement cost. The problem is, we don't have $100,000 lying around to go out and repurchase all of this stuff - And that's what they know and count on. That's why they do it so that they don't have to pay you because they know most people don't have that kind of money laying around...isn't this the reason we have insurance? As far as I'm concerned they are a bunch of manipulative, lying, dishonest group of human beings that should be locked up for taking money for premiums and then not wanting to honor what they represented. They should be ashamed of how they mislead people by taking their money, telling them they are covered by paying more for replacement value, and then turning their backs on them when they have some sort of a claim. Poor, poor business model and I don't know how any of their agents sleep at night. My daughter-in-law and my other son's girlfriend are both influencers on social media and have over 1.5 million followers between the two of them. We are disputing their offer to us and if we get shut down, I'm going to make it my life's mission to do everything I can to get the word out of how deceptive and horrible this company is. I'll do everything I can to make sure the world knows what a bunch of scam artists they are!

Miscommunication ,incompetence and mishandling.
Immediately after my recent accident I made a claim with Safeco. They stated I had to pay for my own rental car.I contacted our insurance broker who verified that we did indeed have $1000 coverage towards a car rental. This was just the beginning of mishandling of our claim including deception, fraud and incompetence .The official police report of my accident clearly stated that the other party was at fault.Safeco said the opposite! They did not even ask or read the police report when investigating my accident. There are other negative aspects that occurred with this claim. It is not worth the effort expounding on them here.Everyone else has had similar devastating experiences. We have asked our broker to find another insurance company .Are they all this dreadful? Thanks for your attention...

am sharing my experience to warn others…
am sharing my experience to warn others who may be considering insurance through Safeco Insurance. My vehicle sustained suspension damage and was taken to BMW for inspection and repair. BMW’s service technician, service manager, and service director all confirmed that key suspension components were damaged and required replacement. They also explained that an alignment cannot be performed when suspension parts are damaged and that the type of damage present was not consistent with normal wear and tear.Safeco’s adjuster, however, reported that the damages are from wear and tear and that only an alignment was needed. This directly contradicted BMW’s findings. When I disputed this, Safeco asked for BMW’s expert opinion regarding the cause of damage. BMW provided that expert statement, clearly stating the damage was not wear and tear. After providing exactly what Safeco requested, communication stalled. My vehicle sat at BMW for nearly a month waiting for a claim decision, with little to no response from Safeco. When a supervisor went on vacation, the claim effectively stopped moving altogether.Safeco ultimately denied coverage, relying solely on its own vendor’s opinion while disregarding multiple qualified BMW professionals and manufacturer repair standards. They later claimed additional evidence was required, even though it was never requested initially. This felt like shifting the goalposts rather than conducting a fair investigation. As a paying policyholder, I expected timely communication, transparency, and a good-faith evaluation of all evidence. Instead, I experienced delays, poor communication, and what felt like a predetermined outcome designed to avoid paying a legitimate claim.Based on my experience, I do not trust Safeco to handle claims fairly. I strongly encourage anyone considering Safeco to research claims-handling reviews carefully and understand what may happen when you actually need to use your coverage.

Useless!!
Have been waiting for 3 hours now for their road side assistance and apparently it can take up to 2 more hours. I have chronic health issues and really need to get home but I'm stranded in the middle of a highway... I have called them repeatedly and kept getting transferred until some lady said she'll "try" to speed things up. Absolutely nothing changed after that. I'm sure that if we didn't pay for our bills on time, they would be MUCH faster to react! Completely unacceptable.

Not transparent, support failed miserably
Tried to find out how my coverage went on windshield repairs/replacement. Support did not have the answer and she would not connect me with someone who did, as her boss did not know any more than she did, but still would not get me to a supervisor. I also requested a copy of my policy by email and never got it, to see what the deductible was. Still waiting! They need to pay service reps more to get better quality support for thier clients. If I had seen these reviews before switching to them, I could have avoided this company all together.
