Prepay Scam
Online system will not allow me to use any of my cards to book a car. When I go onsite cards work fine. It appears that Avis is showing a cheaper option but not allowing individuals to actually access that option (pay in advance).

I would give them lower than 1 star if it was possible.I recently attempted to reserve an 8.5‑metre flatbed truck from Avis — a vehicle they clearly list on their own website. I called on Monday morning and spent 15–30 minutes on the phone while the sales rep contacted the Hamilton (Curtin Avenue) branch to confirm availability. I was told everything was fine and the booking was effectively sorted.Fast‑forward to two days before pickup, after I had already arranged time off work, organised additional people to help with loading and unloading, and planned the entire job around the 8.5‑metre tray… Avis suddenly calls to tell me they only have a 6.5‑metre truck available.I reminded them — again — that I specifically needed an 8.5‑metre truck. Only then did they casually mention that they haven’t had any 8.5‑metre trucks for a while. So why was I told otherwise? Why is it still advertised? And why did it take them days to notify me of something so fundamental? The whole experience was disorganised, misleading, and frankly unacceptable. Their customer service can be summed up in one word: crap. When people are planning logistics, taking time off, and coordinating others, accuracy matters. Avis completely dropped the ball.
If you rent a car for less than 75 miles they will charge you automatically $17.99 for fuel regardless. It happened to me more than once. First time I had to go to some office clerk on site to get this refunded - took me about 20 minutes! Second time was yesterday, I informed the attendant when I returned the car - I specifically told him that I refueled it and do not charge me this fee - it still showed up on my receipt! I called customer service and they asked me to send them the gas receipt! This is simply a scam!
If i could give a zero rating i would. They changed me 560 stg mainly for pre existing damage to the car before I rented it. Also a damage handling fee a cross border fee etc. I feel robbed by this company I have rented for years from other rental companies and never been changed any of the fees they outlined. After months and insistence and provided time stamped photos of previous existing damage got a partial refund but still withholding a damage admin fee for damage i did not cause. They are total sharks. Do not use them this was Geneva 11th December. Total nightmare!
Disappointing Experience with Avis Rent a Car – Greenville Airport & Customer ServiceI had a frustrating and disappointing experience with Avis Rent a Car recently. It started at the Greenville Airport hub, where Kyle was handling the check-in process. Not only did he struggle to input my information correctly, but he also ended up charging me a higher fee than what was originally quoted. It was clear that he lacked the knowledge or training needed to properly assist customers. The situation didn’t improve when I visited the Avis office at 458 Woodruff Rd, Greenville, SC. Michael, who was working there, was equally unhelpful and seemed unfamiliar with the rental process, which only added to my frustration.Customer service was no better. Celisse at Avis Customer Service was downright rude. She didn’t even want to give me her name when I asked and was completely uncaring, showing no concern for the poor service I was receiving. I then reached out to Shawnakay, another manager, through the customer service phone line. Unfortunately, she also failed to offer any assistance, especially when my flight had been canceled twice, and I was facing a 12-hour drive back home. She didn’t offer any discount or even an apology for the inconvenience. It felt as though Avis doesn’t value its customers at all.Overall, this experience has been extremely frustrating and disappointing. I expected a much higher level of service from a well-known company like Avis. I will think twice before renting from them again.
first time I ever used Avis I booked online , total price , tax n fees and everything else. Arrival at the airport . They asked for your card to hold $250 and after you return the car they charge you almost over 200 bucks on hidden fees that's none refundable they stated that I used the insurance which I didn't I told him I use my own The car was returned clean no trash gas full. they charge you over $200 in hidden fees. Don't ever use this company . There's a lot of other better company out there , way better with no hidden fees. This is a scam company.
You know I have been loyal to Avis for no real reason other than connivence ! However this last-experience left me just with no choice but switch to another provider. Road assistance ? Forge it ? Stranded with a non functional vehicle while waiting for hours with all the legal statements (crap ) of unable to leave a vehicle unattended , then the tracking to final place for vehicle was missing. They know where the car was but gave me hard time back and forward for 2 days about the discharge of the vehicle from my account and then charged me for full rental and plus extras etc … Sorry to say but I should be the one compensated for having a non functional vehicle to begin with ! But all left by is un disputable charges and for sure one less customer for sure
Ahmad helped us last week on Thursday. He was patient to explain the policy and even I was frustrated he stayed calm and polite. Great service and we truly appreciate it .
Cheap good vehicle. They accept out of state licenses. But never got my deposit back. That was an extra $250 that I guess just disappeared.
Went to Florida and got a car through avis. The lady at the counter was very nice and helpful! Easy to find the car. I would rent a car from them again in a heart beat! Thank you avis car rental!!!
Two hours to get my car. Lady in fast break must hate her job because she was not customer friendly. Check-in had 5 or 6 workstations with 1 and sometimes two workers. Doubt I will ever use them again.
Avis is scamming. I refueled the car right down the street at the Shell at DFW mart and returned at DFW airport. I filled it to capacity and then I get my e-receipt and see that I was charged an additional $28 refuel charge. They’re banking on the customer not checking the charges and scamming extra fees on top. Gross
I've been a US citizen my whole life I've rented from Avis for over 13 years I go to rent a car in Florida gave them my credit card and my real ID license they wanted a second picture form ID like a passport! That is the dumbest thing in the world I don't carry my passport I'll never rent from them again I'd rather buy a car and resell it someplace else after I'm done then rent a car for Mavis
I rented a car from Avis through Priceline. The night before I was supposed to pick up the rental, the location called and stated they did not have a car for me. I was instructed to call the 1800 number to rebook at a different location. The agent lied and said that they had a coupon I could use for a future rental. I never received any compensation for the inconvenience. I will never book with this company again.
The day before I was leaving thay called and said that thay didn't have my van that was booked 2 plus months prior and that I needed to call in and let them find me one I did had to drive 12 miles more get there and thay know nothing after a hour past the time of pickup thay said thay have one did the paperwork and was told a number and pointed to the right and thats all the van was on 3/4 tank of gas on the paperwork was full never use them
Booked a vehicle rental from Avis in Tampa, and received daily email confirmations of my reservation.on the day of pick up spent $30 on a cab to the the location and was told no cars were available. No assistance offered on site other than a customer service number. Contacted them and they said they couldn’t be of help because no cars were available. Given they don’t honour their reservations or commitments why would anyone book with with them? We’ll never rent from this sham company again, everyone I have told this story to says they won’t either.
Absolutely awful customer service- waited sn hour in line. Asked for the manager who never arrived in the 30 min we waited for our turnWhen it was our turn, they didn’t have the car we booked!
Hello,I am writing to raise a complaint about an issue I experienced with Avis Turkey, a company I have regularly used during my trips to Turkey. I always believed Avis had a strong reputation, but this experience has seriously damaged my trust.I first reported this issue through Avis Turkey directly, as well as through sikayetvar.com and cimer.gov.tr, but I was unable to get a clear or satisfactory response. After seeing that many other customers have reported the same problem online, I decided to contact the headquarters, hoping the matter would be handled more seriously. In short, Avis Turkey appears to be charging an extra 20% tax (which I think is an ill-gotten gain) on road and bridge fees (HGS), even though these fees already include the required taxes and are paid directly to the government. Despite my repeated requests, I was never provided with an official and verifiable document showing the actual HGS charges during my rental period. Instead, I was only given total amounts or a manually prepared document with no official basis. To explain the issue in detail:I rented a car from the Istanbul Beylikdüzü branch between 10–11 January 2026 under contract number 198870534. At the start of the rental, a deposit of 4,500 TL was charged to my credit card. When the rental ended, 3,253.80 TL was refunded, and 1,246.20 TL was kept without any clear explanation. Since there were no issues other than possible HGS usage, I assumed this amount was related to toll charges and did not question it at that time.About a month later, I received another notification that 3,144 TL had been charged to my credit card. When I contacted customer service, I was told this was for “extra toll (HGS) charges.” I then asked for a detailed and official HGS statement to understand these charges, but I was told such a document could not be provided. Instead, I later received an email listing a few toll crossings, which appeared to be manually prepared and not an official record. This made me even more concerned.Although the total amount of the listed toll crossings was 3,658.50 TL, the total amount charged to me (including the first deduction) was 4,390.20 TL. When I questioned this difference, I was informed that a 20% VAT had been added. However, toll fees shown in the official HGS online system already appear as VAT included. My own research also shows that VAT rates on roads and bridges vary and are not 20%.For these reasons, I request that all HGS charges related to my rental be shared with me in an official, verifiable document. After confirming the amounts against official records, I ask that the incorrect 20% VAT be removed and that any overcharged amount be refunded to my credit card.I kindly request a transparent, documented explanation and a proper review of this matter so that the issue can be resolved in line with legal requirements and customer trust can be restored.Sincerely,
You canceled my initial reservation for higher paying customer leaving me without a vehicle and then charging me more when I had to re rent a vehicle. A total bait and switch business practice. You then gave me a vehicle that the front seat would not move to where I needed my legs to be. I had to keep the vehicle because you said there was no others available. The one I had to keep broke down 10 days into my vacation. You told me to bring it back and you would give me another one. How was that supposed to happen when I had no vehicle or way to bring it back? I paid $ 3400 for a bait and switch and was given a lemon and then to top it all off I was given bad service.
I had a reservation on 2-12-26 for a premium elite SUV, which was listed as a Lincoln navigator or similar. The total with fees should have been $832.00 I waited in line with my family for almost an hour. When I got to the counter, the woman working behind the counter hardly said a word to me. I gave her my last name and she charged my credit card and told me my car would be in a specific spot and handed me a piece of paper with the letter and number of the spot . When we got to the car, it was a 15 person van. I told the person working outside and they said I had to go back in and stand behind whoever was talking to the original attendant. So I waited again. And when I got to the counter, the woman looked very unhappy to see me. I told her I was supposed to have a premium SUV and that she gave me the keys to a 15 person minivan. She went and talked to somebody for a while and came back and said they were out of the car that I rented. Then she asked me how large my family was, and I said there’s three of us. So without consulting me, she gave me a Chevy equinox and told me she could give me 20% off . I assumed she meant 20% off the price of a Chevy equinox. When I asked her to specify, she just kind of mumbled and said that’s the best she could do. The situation felt really strange and my family was exhausted so I just took the car and figured I’d call Avis because this woman was alarmingly aloof. She either had no idea what she was doing or she was messing with me. When I got to the car, I saw that my credit card had been charged $1032. So I got on the road and immediately called Avis. The customer service rep was equally as rude and told me they couldn’t make any corrections until I returned the car. She basically then hung up on me. Given what has happened already I have very little confidence that they are going to give me my money back. They have essentially robbed me. I’ve paid $1032 for a premium elite SUV and I am driving a Chevy equinox which rents for about $400 for the amount of time that I will have it. And there seems to be nothing I can do about it. Has anybody ever had this experience? Is there anything I can do?
