HIPPO IS THE PONZI SCHEME OF INSURANCE…

HIPPO IS THE PONZI SCHEME OF INSURANCE COMPANIES. I've owned my home for 27 yrs, never made a claim, EVER. I have perfect credit and my home is in excellent repair; new roof, earthquake retro-fitted, etc. I do not live in a flood or fire zone. I became a HIPPO customer 3 years ago. My last three annual premiums went from $1800, to $2300, with a renewal offer of $4000 for 2026. From start to finish, Hippo has been a nightmare. You can never get a live person when you need them and when you do, it sounds like an overseas call center clerk who never knows anything about your policy or insurance and barely speaks English. Shortly prior to my renewal, While entering my front door, I noticed a drone going all around my property, flying in between my house and my neighbors, right at my master bedroom window as if to peep inside, all around my backyard etc. The drone even taunted me by hovering in front of my face as if to say, "I see you". WHAT AN INVASION OF PRIVACY? I was never told this would happen. Had I been home, I would have likely been undressed and viewable through the window by the drone as my window blinds are often open since my neighbors don't have a view inside. Shortly after the drone-peeping expedition, I received a three page "offer" of renewal with three dozen "risk" concerns; "too many trees", "foliage too close to home" etc. That's when I started looking for a new provider.I found Kin Insurance. I was able to speak to a real agent who was knowledgeable about insurance and crafted my policy. After customizing my coverage, apples to apples comparison to Hippo - my Kin policy was $1764 vs Hippo's $4000. The underwriting process was simple. After agreeing to the policy and price, I used their app to complete the homeowner's property survey by uploading photos of the required key features of my home i.e. roof, house exterior etc. That's fair. They have a right to know who and what they're insuring, and photos protect me if I ever need to make a claim. Straightforward. No sneaky Peeping Tom tactics like Hippo. I highly recommend Kin. There is a reason they have a 4.8 star rating with over 7k reviewers. Adios, Hippo, Good Riddance!!

Beware!!!

The worst insurance company for homeowners that I have ever dealt with I do not recommend this company to anybody else. Their reviews suck!!! And they are all true. The adjusters are the worst you buy insurance you expect to have coverage when it’s time to use it and then there’s no coverage. They tell you there’s coverage for access and they don’t even cover that please people read reviews before buying coverage through this company or any other company!!! Beware adjusters are just trying to save money for their bonuses. That’s why they don’t pay out at least that’s what an Adjuster friend told me… beware, beware, beware!!!

You have serious problems - Bait and Switch - Lack of Hippo integrity

You have serious problems. First, I got a bait-and-switch price via cooperative quotes online. When I called the actual quoting insurer, the rate was much higher. Then I called Hippo, got a smartass person on the line who claimed that this isn't considered bait and switch because I did not actually buy anything and it only took 5 minutes of my time (i.e. no big deal to waste 5 min of a person's time). He then admitted that getting online comparative pricing for homeowners' insurance is a farce because the information from insurers on Hippo is often false, and he has experienced this many times before. You basically have a Hippo employee admitting to Hippo's lack of fidelity.

Unexpected and Misleading Changes to My Hippo Insurance Policy

I had my Hippo mortgage insurance set to auto-renewal, and for a few years everything ran smoothly. But recently, Hippo completely changed the structure of my policy without properly notifying me. They added coverage that makes no sense—like condo insurance on a single-family home—and introduced new deductibles, including a separate roof deductible. They sent the update in the mail, but none of these major structural changes were clearly highlighted. I’ll admit I should have looked more closely at the fine print, but I never expected Hippo to handle something this important so poorly.

I had a fire in my house on August 9th…

I had a fire in my house on August 9th and have been in a hotel for 164 days. I have made progress on demolition, content listing, and rebuild 30% of the time. The rest of the time is like walking in mud up to your armpits. I am not sure if the desk adjusters are incapable or unethical or both, but the process is inefficient and ineffective. If you have an insurance issue with Hippo don’t fool yourself that you can fight this on your own. Hire a public adjuster. Never use their preferred vendors. Better still find an alternative insurance provider.

No name company with predatory rate increases, what is to like?

What a scam of a company. They get you enrolled for a fair price then raise your premium with a predatory rate over the next few years. My monthly premium went from $114 (2018) to $388 (2024) / month. Are you kidding me? I just switched to a much more reputable insurance company today, I am saving over $200 a month and have much better coverage now. I've never wished more ill-will toward a company in my life. If Hippo went out of business tomorrow I would be thrilled but that's exactly what they deserve. Good riddance you crooks.

This has been the worst EVER!

This has been the worst EVER!! This company is not answering our calls, our house has been torn up, we have NO kitchen for 2 months now and we've asked to talk to a manager and even HE/SHE does not return our calls. We had a water leak from the refrigerator's ice maker and had no idea as it was behind the refrig. It ended up going under the hardwood floors, into the walls behind it and the entire kitchen had to be torn out as there was mold throughout the kitchen. It also traveled into the next room and all the way into the master bedroom. We have been living in this horrific situation for over 2 months and have an autistic child in the home as well as a handicapped mother who is unable to walk on her own and it's almost dangerous trying to walk in the house the way it has been left by the demolition company. WE NEED HELP and Insurance company is trying to find a way to NOT PAY to fix this home!! It's been the longest nightmare ever!!

Cancelled after 5 years with no claims…

Cancelled after 5 years with no claims because Hippo thinks there are too many claims in our zip code(I guess that is what they mean by underwriting). Insurance was cancelled with no notice and really caused us a lot of problems with the mortgage company, not to mention the headache of getting new coverage.

BIG SCAM

This is an absolute scam of a company. They don’t cover anything on their home insurance policy. They state that a natural disaster has to happen for full loss. Well a natural disaster just so happened to happen and they told us our deductible went up from last year to this year (without notice or a single correspondence) and quoted us a deductible at the same rate of total loss. Basically what that means is that we have to pay for the whole thing. Also they have the worst customer service department on the planet.

Be very Careful!

This company is awful. I have been with them for 4 years and then 2 months ago they send me a notice (looks like spam) wanting a video of all areas of my house and that it would take 30 minutes to film. Seriously? I am in real estate and I have never seen a request like this. A company with a video of your entire home...what could possibly go wrong..anyways when I called them about it to ask for another option to get the info they wanted they said there were no other options and a week later we got a cancellation notice. Buyer Beware! Seems illegal to me but I will leave that for insurance commissioner.

3rd world

Had our property insured with Hippo for several years, until we had to make two claims short time apart. Not only did we get ditched by Hippo as soon as they had to pony up for a change (this clearly didn't align with their business plan of only collecting premiums), one of their agents "helped" us migrate to a completely wrong third party policy. It's been over 6 months and we're still trying to untangle this mess. Dreadful phone customer service. I've experienced 20min - 1 hour hold times. Often the call would disconnect or go to voice mail. This is third world stuff.

Hippo Insurance is a very shady…

Hippo Insurance is a very shady company, there website and the process may seem very cool which it is for the first time policy buyer from them but once you become a customer that's when the services go downhill.During my last renewal, my mortgage company had provided them with the payments a few week in advance, they failed to renew my policy citing they didn't receive the funds.I went back to confirm with Mortgage company and they said they did then again went to Hippo and they accepted that they have received the funds and assured me to renew it right away.Well 2 weeks pass by and not a peep, nothing renewed. Had to contact again and play the same support game again to get my policy renewed.Recently I reached out to them for getting a quote for the flood insurance, more than a week has passed and they haven't responded to my request as I had requested to be delivered via email. You would get better service and coverage elsewhere, if I can't get a hold of them in good times and if anything goes wrong who knows if I'll be able to get a hold of them ever again.

Hippo Insurance lies on their website…

Hippo Insurance lies on their website and they state that they have 4.9 stars out of 5 on Trust pilot reviews and when I go to the official Trust pilot website I see that they have 2.0 stars. Hippo has the most deceitful customer service agents and management and will drop your policy like they did to me. I’ve never put in for a claim but that don’t matter they will still drop you and then lie to you as to why you were dropped. This company is a complete joke!

Worthless! Premium increases of 175% with no claims

The customer service reps can do NOTHING for you. I have called multiple times trying to reach my agent with no response. I cannot get anyone to make changes to my policy or even call me back. The customer portal only allows you to view your current policy but you cannot make needed changes - at all. Even though I have my agent's name & number, I cannot reach him & nobody will call you back.

Hippo Insurance is a joke.

While on vacation our dog walker found a massive leak in the kitchen. A pipe had burst depositing water throughout the kitchen. We had the water turned off, called an emergency plumber and contacted Hippo to initiate a claim. First they didn't know if it was approved, then they said it was. They were supposed to get an adjuster out to look at it. The adjuster didn't call for a week. Then Hippo decided after seeing some photos the damage was from a "long term leak" and would not be covered. Then they called back a week later and wanted to do a "review of the claim" to see if 'maybe' they were wrong in their judgement. At this point, we had already signed with a contractor to do the repairs out of pocket. Then I got an email notification that my annual renewal policy was 'cancelled.' When I finally got the actual cancellation letter, it said we were being cancelled due to "unacceptable fire risk." There is a fire department less than a mile away. Down the hill from the house, on the backside and across the road, there is a lake. We had had insurance with them since 2018. Needless to say, I cancelled their adjuster visit. (The person never came out in the first place.) This company is a joke. Stay away from them for homeowner's insurance.

Tedious process

The initial process to get a quote was fairly easy compared to other insurers but they quoted me 27% more than my current insurer, and 30% more than another competitor. When I inquired about simply changing the Dwelling coverage to match my existing one, I was advised to go through a "Self inspection process".They sent me a text message and it took forever to completed the process (about 50 pictures to take of EVERYTHING in, outside and around your home), this was a nightmare.Once this was completed, they announced me I would have to wait 7 business days (on average) for them to update the quote.I ended signing up with another insurer.

My premium increased $600 this year!!

My homeowners premium increased $600 this year!!! I tried to call for clarification but could not get through. I then sent an email. It's been 13 (count them thirteen) days and I still haven't heard back. I called again and was left on hold for over an hour when they offered to call me back and I wouldn't lose my place in line. 6 hours later I received a call and was told by a very rude customer service rep that there is nothing they can do because I have to pay for the risk Hippo takes for those who have made claims. Mind you I've NEVER had a claim! This is unacceptable. This is terrible service! This is totally a ripoff!

Very disappointed with my Claim handling of Hippo& Topa

I’m very frustrated and disappointed with the way my claim Is being handled.Apparently, I bought home insurance from Hippo 6 months ago. 3 weeks ago I had a property damage due to plumbing leakage. I submitted my claim to hippo. At first they said , my insurance is underwritten by Topa even though I bought it from Hippo. And Hippo said they are transferring my claim to Topa and Hippo customer service said adjuster named Peter from Topa should contact me in 48 hours. Even after 7 days there was no response from Topa. Then I contacted Hippo for Claims Concierge. They have assigned Deanna , she immediately responded within 24 hours I thought my claim is going to be fine. Now we are in 2nd week of my claim, she sent someone to estimate the damages at my property. The guy and Deanna both mentioned that Report should be ready in a week. Now in 3rd week, I reached out to Hippo again. This time a customer support agent said they no longer my Claims . It’s Topa’s responsibility. I insisted on transferring my call to Deanna. Deanna broke the news that she is no longer the adjuster. It’s Topa’s responsibility for all California Claims before August 1st 2019. When I contacted Topa again about my claim status , they bounced back saying that it’s Hippo responsibility. contact them again. Hippo says they don’t have access to Topa system. I’m really frustrated with both Hippo, Topa . It has been 3 weeks after my claim is submitted. Still no response from Topa. Hippo doesn’t take the care of their customers . Their claims concierge is a bogus so far. The reason I was given due to their contract I won’t recommend Hippo or Topa Insurance again
