We rented a car for six weeks from…

We rented a car for six weeks from December from Avis in Atlanta - for a cost of $2550. We returned the car to Tampa, where we were charged a further $550. This was because the Atlanta branch had not credited part of the prepaid voucher to Tampa. It took three telephone calls and six emails to get the $550 reimbursed to my Amex card.

Horrendous treatment of a paying customer

Hired a car via the British Airways affiliate website to pick up at LAX Flight cancelled so pick up delayed, eventually arrived at LAX at 8pmAsked to sign electronically a document that stated the car will be supplied with a full tank of fuel On pickup car smelled rank inside and had only reserve fuel in the tank, 29 miles range Customer sales agent was nowhere to be seen once he handed keys over in the office so with a 90 minute drive ahead at 8pm I decided to fill the car up myself and sort out the bill later instead of more waiting around On hand back a week later I spoke to a customer service advisor and told him of the situation on collection. He stated that I will be refunded on the basis I wasn’t given a car with a full tank of fuel as per the agreement, and advised me to contact Avis customer service on my return to the UK On my return, the Avis UK customer service number kept disconnecting me after several menu prompts so I contacted Avis via their customer service portal (click here to contact us). I explained the situation, attached a copy of the receipt for the fuel used to fill the car up on the date of collection and within 30 minutes of collection to be advised by Avis customer services that “You were advised to contact customer services by our agent at the airport” - hello? I contacted customer services via their website as I’m not going to call a US number from the UK to speak to someone Also “regretfully we do not reimburse customers for fuel they put in the vehicle” Well if I’d been given a vehicle full of fuel in the first place instead of one with enough fuel for 29 miles range, in a foreign city at 8pm, I wouldn’t have needed to, would I, Avis? Would you prefer I drove the 29 miles to an empty tank and call for assistance Avis? In LA? Not exactly the safest place on the planet

SCAM !

I am extremely disappointed with my experience with Avis, which involved unauthorized charges totaling $214 added to my rental agreement despite my explicit refusals. At pickup, the agent (Abraha) offered several optional services that we clearly and repeatedly declined, including:Additional insuranceToll programFuel service option (prepaid fuel)Despite our refusal, these options were added anyway. What makes this situation unacceptable is that:We were told the fuel service option was mandatory, which is false. We were told that even if we refueled the car ourselves, we would still be charged, which is misleading. We returned to the counter a second time to explicitly request removal of the insurance. We spent nearly 45 minutes negotiating, only to be told it was “impossible” to remove these options. At return, all these options were still charged. We did not use a single toll road, yet toll fees were applied. We were charged over $71 for fuel, even though refueling the car ourselves would have cost around $30. I am perfectly willing to pay for the fuel actually used, but not for imposed service fees.I even contacted Avis Customer Service by phone while at the rental location, and I was told the toll option would be refunded — yet the other unauthorized charges remained. This is not a misunderstanding. It is a clear case of optional services being imposed through misleading information, resulting in $214 in unjustified charges.I expect Avis to address this issue seriously and refund the charges. Until then, I cannot recommend this company.

Avis rental are a bunch of thieves

I typically use Enterprise rental and I used Avis because it was conveniently located next to a Hair Salon that my daughter was getting her hair done. I happen to run into the manager/owner at the time. He was a very nice guy. I forgot his name, but I wanna say it was Kevin.Nonetheless, on January 31, 2026, Georgia experienced a very bad snowstorm. We all know Georgia is not accustomed to snow and the whole state goes into a state of emergency when that happens. I attempted to return the car that morning, but I was unable to as the car was slipping and sliding, and the roads were not yet treated and it just started snowing early that morning. I made an attempt, but I had to turn the car back around due to the conditions of the road and law-enforcement redirecting traffic. There were a few accidents I could see up ahead. I never would’ve made it from Braselton to Buford. I just found out yesterday that they charge my credit card excessive fees for returning the car late. I called the very morning to inform them that I cannot return the car safely and they told me to keep the car until Monday. Now I’m being told that they kept my security deposit and charge me late fees and fees for extended rental for keeping the car longer than I should have. I’m so shocked and surprised. I was referring people to this location because I was so impressed with the way. The owner was, but the rest of the company as well as that location has very unprofessional young girls working there. As far as the 1800 customer service number, I had a lady speaking to me on the phone who sounded like she’s never spoke a day of English in her life. I could barely understand her. The only thing I understood was her telling me I was only getting $32 refunded. Not only am I going to dispute this with my credit card, I’m going to contact my Law Firm that I utilize and I’m going to have them take over addressing this matter. Avis will not get away with what they did. They are thieves, and I advised people to go elsewhere

DO NOT USE

Hired a car from Avis was told it was $660 got to the rental desk and was charged.$1056 Returned the car and was told everything was fine nothing and no other charges Then over a week later I received a email stating I owed $250 for excessive cleaning. I asked why we hadn’t been advised on returning the car. They sent the photographs of the alleged $250 worth of cleaning. As you can see from photographs this is not $250 it is just Avis EXCESSIVE CHARGING

Don’t rent a vehicle!

Don’t rent a vehicle!! I was misinformed about unlimited mileage. I asked 3 times if unlimited mileage and told yes. It was 2 hours into our trip and the service vehicle light came on ( we were traveling from Michigan to Texas) . So when we turned in the vehicle I was charged $971.00 for mileage!! Customer service did NOT care!!! Never use Avis!!!!!

Avis Scam

booked my car rental for Avis specifically to avoid issues and to ensure a safe and reliable experience. However, upon arrival at the pickup location, I was told that my booking was made through a third party and that the vehicle category I reserved was not available. I was informed that I would need to pay an additional USD 80 to receive a car. I explained that this situation was not my fault, as I had a confirmed booking and the reserved vehicle category should have been available. Unfortunately, the staff member I dealt with was rude, uncooperative, and adamant. As I was traveling with my children, I felt pressured and had no practical choice but to agree and proceed with the rental. What makes the situation worse is that although I was told the extra charge would be USD 80, I was actually charged USD 105. This unexpected and unexplained overcharge is unacceptable. I have contacted Avis on return and their customer service (Hershelle) wrote to me that I signed the upgrade but he must understand it was take it or leave it situation. All in all even after booking with Avis you are not guaranteed to be spared from scams.

I booked a rental car from Avis through…

I booked a rental car from Avis through Uber in Miami on Dec 31, 2025. Everything showed the delivery (to my condo in Edgewater) of the car is happening , until the last minute when Mavis, for no logical reason, cancelled the delivery. My multiple attempts to discuss the issue with Avis booking centre in San Diego and the rental lot in Miami Beach was unsuccessful. The staff very rather dismissive, incompetent and unhelpful. My pan for the day was ruined because of Avis unreliable service. I strongly recommend that if you need a rental car use any other rental company but Avis.

This was the worst rental experience

This was the worst rental experience I’ve ever had.We arrived at IAH and the vehicle we reserved wasn’t available, so we were switched into a different car. From there, everything went downhill. The vehicle became unusable due to charging issues and required repair, and the roadside process was a mess, hours of delays and difficulty getting customer care when we were in need, traveling with a 1-year-old child. Even after purchasing roadside coverage, we were still pressured into paying out-of-pocket for the tow. Then, when Avis “resolved” it by switching us into another vehicle, I found roaches in the replacement car. That’s a serious sanitation and safety issue and completely unacceptable. To make matters worse, during the exchange I left my laptop in the vehicle I was switched into. Since then, I’ve been unable to get help from Avis Lost & Found no one answers, other agents say they can’t assist, the online form won’t load, and the phone line keeps hanging up.It feels like there is no functional support when something goes wrong.Between the unusable vehicle, the infestation, and the total lack of customer support, I would not recommend Avis at this location.

Avoid this company at all costs

Avoid this company at all costs. Worst company I’ve come across. Gave me a faulty vehicle that broke down. They collected in morning as basically fobbed off until gone 5pm which meant I had to cancel my hotel as I was travelling a long distance. Now the nasty company refuse to reimburse my additional hotelFees I incurred. Would never use them again.

If only I could give zero stars

If only I could give zero stars. Avis is all about the upsell using scaremongering in Miami. We bought through Hola and clearly they have a real issue with Hola. They told us we hadn’t paid for insurance or an extra driver and couldn’t take the car without paying. Fortunately I had a certificate of insurance as i buy annual cover for car hire. This just made themeven more mad. Telling us we will lose everything if we have an accident. They had little choice but to let us take the car. The car was dirty and had no water in the windscreen reservoir. Truly horrible experience. I shouldn’t need a Harvard lawyer to go through a rental bill but you do with Avis. Interestingly my nephew, wholives in the usa, also hired with them and had noupsell, so clearly targeting tourists. Now watching my credit card statement like a hawk to make sure they don’t take any other payments. This is a real issue that they can just take money from your credit card after the booking finished with zero authorisation.

I am not a renter

I am not a renter, but a former employee. I want to let a potential traveler know whose flying to the DFW area, not to rent from Avis Budget period. Because, if you book a specific vehicle online to pick up at the DFW location, 10 times out 10 you WILL NOT get the vehicle you booked online when you arrive there. Hidden fees get charged, The front counter have to sell you a service just so they can receive their commission. So potential renter beware of this rental company.

When collecting the car in Florida the agent commented on the low rate achieved by renting via a UK agent.Following return my credit card was charged for “package charges”?These charges matched the total rental charge. What a rip off outfit!

Horrendous service: it took 3.5hrs to get a pre-booked car!

We arrived 5 weeks ago at Boston Logan Airport for a prebooked 3 weeks Avis car rental. Avis had failed to advised us on how to get to the car collection point. There was a complementary phone booth for car-rental companies at arrivals. However, after dialling the stated short-code for Avis, a message told us that there was nobody at Avis’s offices to take our call. We placed 4 further calls over the next 20 minutes, only to receive the same answer on all 4 occasions. Finally we decided to use Google Maps in order to walk (with heavy luggage) to the car collection point, which was some 25 minutes away.On arrival at the car collection point we asked 3 Avis staff members (who had been attending a single, lone single customer!) why nobody had answered our call. Not only were they unaware of the car-rental phone booth at the airport, but one staff member started laughing, saying we must have dialled the wrong number. It took them 10 minutes to find our booking, they then wanted to charge us more than 1800 USD for a rental that we already had paid for online. For some reason, the car we had booked was unavailable, so after a delay of 2 hours we were provided with an “upgrade” and set off for Maine … we only got 500 yards before a dashboard message told us that our “upgrade” needed an oil change ... which meant returning to the “helpful” Avis staff for a car that actually could be rented without problems … only to be told by a different staff member that there were plenty of cars available of the type we had booked …Now, after a total delay of 3 hours, we were finally provided with the car we had booked, changed over our luggage from the faulty car, and asked the Avis garage staff member (Lady “A”) how we could open the gas tank flap … she didn’t know, so she looked for a corresponding lever in the car, she couldn’t find it, so she decided to get us a different car … YOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS! An Avis garage staff member does not know how to access the gas tank of an Avis rental car … REALLY?As Lady “A” rushed off, we decided to asked another close-by Avis staff member (Lady “B”) if she knew how to open the gas tank flap … Oh no, what had we done??? Lady “A” overheard us asking Lady “B”, and she didn’t like it at all!!! She started berating us, saying that Lady “B” wouldn’t know either how to access the gas tank. After Lady “A” had stomped off in a huffy to get rental car #3 for us, Lady “B” started to look for the gas tank flap … and presto, after 5 minutes she found it, clearly putting Lady “A” in her miserable little place! After 3.5 hours of various delays, we finally left Avis with a car that turned out to be exactly what we had wanted. Lady “B” had been very welcoming, however Lady “A” and all the other Avis staff members we had met on this occasion appeared to be in the wrong employment. They seemed not willing to serve customers, instead they were brash & rude, or just uninterested, or a mixture of all 3.During this rental, the car could not have been better, whilst most Avis staff members wet had met could not have been any worse!

Costumer service is horrible

Costumer service is horrible. You get transferred to 3 people that can't do anything. I clicked on Decline on all 4 rental options. Prepaid for reservations, printed out invoice and see I have paid for 2 of the 4 rental options. I call and Avis's costumer service line and was told there is nothing they can do after being transferred to 3 people. Done with Avis, this is not the first time I have gone throw this with them. Bad thing is Avis does not care at all.

Refueling charge outrageous (even though I was assured it would not be)

I booked, and paid in advance, for a car rental with Avis at LAX. Arriving at the LAX car rental center after a 10-hour flight, I found a queue with about 50 people in it and two customer service agents. I waited two hours in the queue to finally get to an agent. The agent was very kind, told us we should avail of Avis's offer to fill the tank at the end of the rental at a cost of $4.77 per gallon (good price for California) instead of returning the car with a full tank. I did return the car at the appointed time, clean and in perfect condition, with the tank 1/3 empty. Two days later I get a bill for $95.47 - far more than would be required to fill 1/3 of the tank. After much fiddling and two phone calls, lasting an hour, with people who don't speak English well, I was offered a refund of $54.80. This is fair enough and much closer to the actual cost of the fuel. The whole process was frustrating. I am not impressed.

Never use this company

Never use this company. The appalling reviews on Trustpilot are reflective of the kind of service you will receive. After 2 weeks on the Californian coast there was a negligible amount of sand in the car and was charged $450!!! That equated to about half the cost of the car hire.Do not use them…

They fraudulently added more than $300 in extra charges for services that I DID NOT request and they DID NOT mention, including fuel charges and roadside assistance - despite me not using roadside assistance and returning the car completely full of gas. The lady at the check in desk clearly added those services without mentioning them. Furious!

Hidden charges

Hidden charges, no contract provided, and poor customer serviceI booked a car hire at Los Angeles Airport via Holiday Autos with Avis 13 August 2025. The rental was prepaid in full, including insurance and taxes.Despite this, Avis charged my AMEX an additional $496 for optional extras (insurance, roadside assistance and refuelling) that were never explained, disclosed, or agreed to. The car was returned full of fuel. The biggest issue: I never received a rental contract. Avis cannot evidence an email, and no paper copy was given at pickup. My signature was taken on a tiny digital screen, with no charges shown. Repeated requests for proof of consent or evidence of the charges have been ignored.I’ve spent weeks chasing both Avis. Avis has even admitted in writing that my experience was “not typical of their usual high standards”, yet refuses to resolve the charges. This is not the level of transparency or fairness I expect from a global rental brand. I am now escalating the matter through American Express and regulatory bodies in California and the UK.Warning to others: Always insist on a printed copy of the rental contract at pickup, and be cautious about hidden extras being added without consent. OR JUST AVOID AVIS BUDGET!
