frustrating experience with Thumbtack

I had a very frustrating experience with this platform’s review system. I left feedback for a professional I worked with multiple times and was extremely satisfied with, but the rating that was published did not match what I actually selected when submitting it.I contacted support right away to correct it, since the posted rating misrepresented my experience and could negatively affect the business. Unfortunately, despite multiple messages, I was told nothing could be changed due to policy limitations. Even when I explained that the rating shown was not what I intended to submit, they refused to fix or remove it.It’s very concerning that a platform centered around trust and customer feedback does not prioritize accuracy when a customer reports an incorrect rating. This makes it hard to rely on the system and raises serious doubts about how reviews are handled.

Thumb-spam

This used to be a legit way to find contractors & companies. But that's changed. The last two times I submitted job specs for potential contractors, I ended up getting spammed with fake claims of promised work and money owed. Even got text messages that demanded my credit card info to pay for a "lead." Another service bites the dust.

Contractor beware of thumbtack

My experience with Thumbtack as a contractor has been terrible. When I first started, the lead costs seemed reasonable because I kept my weekly budget low. The second I raised my budget, the cost per lead jumped significantly — with no justification. It feels like the more you’re willing to spend, the more they charge you. There’s no transparency in how these leads are priced.Customers can contact up to five different pros for the same job, and every single contractor gets charged — whether you get the job or not. I was clearly told I wouldn’t be charged if a customer didn’t respond. That is simply not true. I’ve been charged for leads where the customer never replied, or responded once and then completely disappeared.I was also told refunds would be processed within a day or two after disputing charges. That didn’t happen. The money never went back into my account as promised.I was getting charged for nearly every lead that came in, regardless of quality or outcome. Many of these “leads” felt like dead ends from the start. As a contractor trying to run a legitimate business, it feels like the platform profits whether you succeed or not — and that’s the problem.Contractors should be extremely cautious before investing serious money here. Monitor every charge closely, because the system is not built with the contractor’s best interest in mind.

Dishonorable Company

Thumbtack has a business that falsifies information. The name of the business is Flips Furniture Services and the owner is John Jackson. I hired him from another website and am working with Consumer affairs of Montgomery County, Md as he damaged my loveseat and refuses to refund my money. Sheriffs have tried to serve him papers but can’t as he failed to provide an address where his business is located. Thumbtack refuses to provide the information which is a civil suit now. NEVER USE THIS COMPANY FOR ANYTHING! They are useless and people need to be made aware!

I’ve given Thumbtack more than a year

I’ve given Thumbtack more than a year, and I can confidently say it’s been a complete waste. I’ve barely gotten one real lead—never made a dime. About 90% of what I see is just ghost leads or fake accounts draining money. Even worse, you sign up for HVAC services, and they send you nonsense like a stove hood replacement. It’s a total scam, burning cash with no return.

I never write reviews about anything

I never write reviews about anything, unless it's a very one sided experience, good or bad. I had been a moving pro for over 3 years, over 300 5 star reviews, hired over 600 times, and suddenly (no email or call/text) I tried to go into the app to check any unread messages and what not, and get a message that my account had been deactivated. Called support, which is even more useless, and some said it was due to a violation of terms and conditions, which apparently, they were not able to disclose to me. So they deactivated me without giving me any valid reason, as I was maintaining my business strictly on this app, so I would have never done anything to risk that, but they refuse to elaborate on what was violated. Anyone looking to start a business, do yourself a favor, and NEVER get on this app, because just when you think you're doing great, they will deactivate you for a non-disclosed reason and reject any appeal requests (if they ever respond to you). On top of that, all of what the other reviews are saying is true. The amount of fake leads, super low quality and lack of screening of people that sign up to the app to send inquiries to pros, is overwhelming. They let anyone send you a lead, they get paid regardless, and reject any refund because "it's in their terms and conditions that leads don't HAVE to respond to you". I will be leaving this review everywhere possible, and I will make my voice heard. So thumbtack, if you want to make things right and give me my rightful account back, reach back out to me and handle things properly.

Not the place to find leads

The leads they provide are consistently poor quality. Their refund process is extremely frustrating, as nothing qualifies for approval. When you dispute inaccurate leads or even cases where the prospect clearly states they do not need the service, their explanations are often misleading and dismissive. On top of that, the customer service experience is disappointing and lacks transparency throughout.

Thumbact is a hit or miss

Thumbact is a hit or miss, I get charged for fake leads, they don't verify the Customers phone numbers and getting a refund is very hard to do. They can drain your account in a day and distribute Leads to everyone. I got a Direct Lead and while responding, got the same project on the Opportunities Page. Its become another Angie's List!! They don't advertise enough to get more projects,

Got banned IMMEDIATELY

I am furious and will never open this site again. I am trying to pick up a drumming hobby and a few minutes after I sent a respectful message to one of the pros there, my account was deactivated and I have to wait days for them to even look at my appeal. This site is stupid.

This company has stolen $619.72 from me. And then denies that they have any transactions on their record.....clearly my bank statement shows otherwise. They are scam artists and dont care about their customers. Use a different app unless you are independently wealthy and dont care if someone steals your money.

My money was also stolen

My money was also stolen. This company is engaged in fraudulent activities. After obtaining bank card details, they withdraw money without authorization. No work or services are provided. I strongly warn others to be cautious and not to share any payment information with this company.

Ongoing Fake Leads on Our Account

Ongoing Fake Leads on Our Account - Assist Appliance RepairWe’ve been a Thumbtack Pro for years, but since October 2025 to February 2025 the platform has gone downhill badly. Almost every “lead” we’ve received has been fake—nonexistent names, disconnected phone numbers, and no real customers. We’ve reported these leads and requested refunds as instructed, but many were denied without reason. To date, we’ve lost over $1,000+ on fake leads. What makes it worse is the complete lack of support. We’ve reached out multiple times through phone and email, but Thumbtack employees have been unhelpful and dismissive. As a small business, every dollar matters, and being charged for invalid leads feels like exploitation, not support. If this continues, we’ll have no choice but to seek legal action. Thumbtack needs to take responsibility, fix the fake lead problem, and stop charging hard-working businesses for invalid requests. Right now, I cannot recommend this platform to any professional.

Thumbtack is a scam

Im legitimately licensed electrical contractor and insured with 23 years of experience. I left thumbtack 3 years ago because their leads were expensive. The fees racked up very quick due to tire kickers, and people that would request for work but never responded to my messages. The refund policy is extremely strict and refunds were rare. When selecting the type of jobs that I'm willing to take, there are not a whole lot of options. It's as if this is intentional. There is a broad range of tasks and electrician will perform but also fine line with items we will not do either like fix a lamp that doesn't work which is ridiculous . We still get charged for customers that reach out with broken lamps or a shade . Customers would reach out to me with bogus requests and I still will get charged for it. These type of jobs are not even meant for licensed electricians. I rejoined January of 2026 thinking the platform may be different. Their leads are more expensive now pushing nearly $100 per lead. More tire kickers, I get requests for items I specifically list in my profile that I do not do but I still get charged for it and refunds are impossible. Aside from the increased cost, the only thing I noticed the platform updated is that they have AI record all phone calls and messages for their benefit, not the contractor. They want to have all the information readily available so that it can assist "THEM" with their refund disputes. They have not done any updates to make it work for the contractor. 4+ contractors are reached out to from each customer making each contractor pay for that lead and many times none of them getting the job. Thumbtack is a scam. I will not recommend it

I spent $96 on leads and did not…

I spent $96 on leads and did not receive any quality responses. In most cases, clients stopped responding immediately after the lead was accepted. Support explained that charges are for the “opportunity,” not engagement, which means pros are still billed even when there is zero interaction. Unfortunately, this model places all the risk on service providers. This may work for some, but it was not sustainable for my business.
