I have had consistently terrible experiences at UCLA Health over the past 5 years. I've had their billing department take my co-pay then charge separately out of pocket and keep the co-pay without refunding. I've had them quote 10x the fees for a routine colonoscopy compared to other local facilities. I've had terrible wait times and overworked health care professionals. At one point a phlebotomist blew through so many of my veins they destroyed the veins completely that when the procedure came they could not find a vein. When I sought recourse or to file a complaint, there was no easy way to protect future patients and they made it nearly impossible to file the complaint. Deceiving billing practices and run down or big headed health care professionals. There are other places to go in LA, don't believe the US News hype. I imagine they pay for that ranking.
My UCLA doctor is excellent!! Trying to communicate with him over the website is terrible. The doctor use to communicate with me directly and it worked GREAT. Now a nurse is a go between and I can't get to the doctor because of her. I just saw him and he was going to prescribe a medication that he prescribed before, but the nurse won't let him prescribe it without video visit. Also, trying to use the UCLA telephone system has proved to be a big problem. You can't your doctors office directly, you have to go through the UCLA switchboard and they have to try and communicate with your doctors office for you if they can get through. Most inefficient!
I love my primary care doctor at UCLA- 5 stars. But if you have an issue- no UCLA. I had neurological pain and I've paid at least $5K in tests- blood, EMG, MRI, etc. to be told the only solution was physical therapy. In this economy am going broke cause of UCLA and they don't care. I have Cedars as well and from now only going to Cedars.
If you are an out of state patient, dont bother, AVOID!! They have no regard for patients traveling from out of state. They scheduled my husband for an appt with the incorrect doctor so he came all the way down and wasn't able to see his doctor and now they are requiring the SAME tests he already had here in Vegas but saying he has to come back to do them at UCLA before the surgeon will even agree to do the surgery. My husband has a degenerative disease that is getting worse by the day and hes down 30 lbs in months because he can't eat. It is absolutely unacceptable that a referral FOR THE SURGERY is being treated like he needs a diagnosis AGAIN. We are paying out of pocket and its been an nightmare with how many tests they keep doing and asking for. He has already been diagnosis and proposed treatment. AVOID UCLA
UCLA says they really care about their patients, but won't let their doctors fill out forms from the Civil Rights Deparment to save my life due to my deadly disease. They are responsible for me losing my case and putting my life totally at risk. That's great patient care. Don't get involved to save a life.
UCLA primary care and dermatology are a joke. I went in for my annual physical, there was absolutely no physical exam at all. Why? It is not profitable so they have your Primary Care doctor run a bunch of blood tests that cost your insurance company money then refer you out to a bunch of UCLA specialists. Same with UCLA dermatology, it takes forever to get an appointment, you probably will never see the same dermatologist as it is a revolving door there. They don't check everywhere which can be a real problem as I have learned. You ask about the procedure for your exam and they tell you the physical part of the exam is not necessary. I went to another doctor the following year for my physical and sure enough he found an issue that is now worse because the idiot head of UCLA health is paid by pharma to not believe in touch medicine. Unless it is James Heaps then he can touch away.
Their PHONE Service ( I.E. just TRY to get hold of your Doctors office) that you are Forced to wade through...enter all your info..JUST to be ASKED TO GIVE them the SAME INFO AGAIN...Then..after being on HOLD for 20 mins. are put BACK on hold again!!!! A AWFUL buisness to try and Contact or deal with!! they suck..the people that organise their communications needs to be in PRISON !!
I have worked for UCLA as a medical assistant, CNA and eventually as an RN, used UCLA personally for all medical care over my entire life as I grew up here on the Westside. I have loved all of my experiences up until the last year. I pay $2600/ for 3 people to have Blue Shield. Regardless of how much I pay we should all be able to get medical care, I am only trying to point out there is no reason I should be lacking care. Recently I went to my primary with some painful issues. On May 28th I received 2 referrals, general surgery & the GI clinic. Neither could see me till November! That is at least 5 months away. I called daily and the GI clinic fit me in farther away from my house which I said was fine. General surgery even with multiple calls and an urgent referral can not schedule me till November. My husband and I have both needed physical therapy over5 the last year. UCLA charges your insurance for a full hour but sees you for about 30 minutes. Very difficult to schedule and rarely do any hands on muscle manipulation or work. Its almost exclusively showing me exercises and giving me a new band to use. I will be switching to Cedars or St. Johns facilities where I can get good and appropriate care. They are farther away and or a much smaller operation, but I do not feel that UCLA is currently able to provide good care at the satellite and Santa Monica offices and facilities. I would rather go to St. Johns or Cedars than battle with the traffic and issues of Westwood & Ronald Regan to find out if they are any better over there. I am sad and disappointed to be writing this.
My problem with UCLA Health is their appointment system. I needed to reschedule my appointment with my endocrinologist doctor due to an emergency, they postponed my appointment by more than 4 months, FOUR MONTHS. I'm over 70 years old and diabetic. I do NOT recommend this organization.
When you actually see a doctor, it's good, but seeing a doctor is not easy. ANY appointment I try to make is at least two months away, so, unless it's not important, or just a test, it's useless; you'll just have to go to an Urgent Care and get inline & wait hours with everyone else. I'm convinced that's their business model: make it very difficult to see your primary care physician so you'll just go to their Urgent Care, which I assume is more profitable for them.Even if you do make an appointment, they can cancel it with little warning. I had an appointment to see a pulmonary specialist. I waited over two months, only to have the appointment canceled two days before I was to be seen. I didn't even bother re-scheduling... Obviously it's not important if it can wait four months, so why bother?I sincerely regret signing up with UCLA health, and will be switching to something else as soon as I can. At one time UCLA had a great reputation, but now it's just another business, where profits art more important than peoples health. Sad, but true... AVOID!
Elise B., Ultrasound technician in Calabasas was wonderful this morning. So pleasant and personable. Also, knew her job so well. Jessica Lopez-Welcoming me and taking initial information was also very pleasant and professional. Great experience all around. So happy I have UCLA Services.
nice on line services
Yet another victim of UCLA price gouging. My daughter is a full time student. She went to her regular doctor with a sore throat. She was told that our insurance was no longer accepted but she could go next door to UCLA Immediate Care. No one warned her that meant she had to pay cash. $520 for a sore throat exam. It would have been $80 at the private Urgent Care one block away. No excuse for this price. No wonder health insurance is expensive.
WARNING: Do not let what happened to me happen to you. And though there were many kind and helpful employees that tried their best to help along the way, the UCLA billing system is simply designed to simply... bill. Background for my situation and suggestions on how to make sure this doesn't happen to you.My GP sent me to UCLA RONALD REAGAN for an ultrasound (possible hernia). Prior to the procedure, I called that office to ask what my out of pocket costs would be. I was told that my out of pocket would be zero and that I was covered by my insurance. Had the procedure the next day. Two weeks later, I received a bill for $1806.00. ($3000 was billed to Blue Cross who paid nothing but made UCLA only charge the "discounted" price of $1806. And I had not met my large deductible so am responsible for the full 1806.00) Immediately made calls to UCLA billing who forwarded me to special radiology billing who told me that the person I spoke to re out of pocket costs should not have given me that information and had misspoke. I then asked what the cash price (sans insurance) would be - was forwarded to another department and was told that it would be $630.00 (still about double the cost of most independent labs). I suggested that I would pay the cash price but then told I was "too late", and that I would have had to decide to pay cash prior to the procedure.Logic anyone?Blue Cross suggested I have UCLA "retract the claim" so I could pay the cash price (told me UCLA has ability to do this) however, I was then told by RAZ @ UCLA PATIENT BUSINESS SERVICES that it is against UCLA policy to retract claims. When asked why Blue Cross would suggest UCLA could do this, was told Blue Cross doesn't know UCLA policy and would rather "push the situation off onto the provider." (Entire system not designed for consumers' best interests)UCLA has created a "Customer Experience" department to deal with these types of issues and the person that helped me was as helpful as she could possibly be. She also told me this unfortunately happens too often and that there's really nothing that could be done. She suggested that billing could make an "exception" but I hit a brick wall. Which makes sense. Why would UCLA give up an extra $1200.00 if they don't have to?STEPS TO TAKE SO THIS DOESN'T HAPPEN TO YOUEven if you have insurance, find out what the CASH price is for whatever procedure you're getting. This will likely take multiple calls and a few days of your time. BE A PATIENT PATIENT. AND BE PERSISTENT. UCLA would rather not have you pay cash. They can and will bill insurance 5-10x that actual cost. Then find out from your insurance provider (NOT UCLA) what the costs will be if the claim is made (this will of course be based on your personal coverage and deductible so get the answers you need prior to the procedure) If you are in the UCLA system (have a UCLA GP) they will always send you to a UCLA lab for work and will AUTOMATICALLY BILL YOUR INSURANCE. YOU ARE IN THE SYSTEM SO THEY DO NOT HAVE TO GIVE YOU OPTIONS OR ANY INFORMATION...UNLESS YOU ASK. And even if you do ask, as I did, make sure you ask the correct people and the correct questions. And finally, do your homework (which is why you're on Yelp right now), there are many friendly, helpful and reputable independent providers for these services that will be way more affordable than UCLA (especially, if like many of us, have relatively high deductibles).
Billing big ripoff !!!!i am being billed for a tetanus shot,,, $275 dollars, and my insurance, both medicare and my supplement plan already paid you OVER hundred dollars and you still want more. This is the same shot i can get at a CVS pharmacy for $30. and you want to get paid $275.Are you people insane ?????? Please have your billing department call me personally. I will be posting a review to warn other of ucla health greediness. SHAMEFUL !!!!!!
Organizations like these are worse than scammers/ fraudsters .Here’s why:I’ve been having a bad cough for the past 10 days now, and yesterday I decided to reach out to a doctor as it wouldn’t get away and started to get worst. I called UCLA health, and they immediately took all my details over the phone.I then asked them when I could come by, and they said I they couldn’t take me in because I had a cough so I’d have to do a video consultation instead. I specifically asked what the cost of this video consultation would be, they told me it would be $80. 20 min later, I get on the call, explain my story including that I don’t have a fever, and the doctors first questions after I finished is “do you have a fever”?. Without asking any extra questions he said I should go to Walgreens and get a nasal spray. This call lasted a total of 4 min 22 seconds, no questions where asked and the nasal spray hasn’t done a single thing. Today, I get an email from this doctors will a bill of $345 !!!!!!What kind of ridiculous scam is this???I called UCLA health and the lady said billing would call back, but note: this is not a mistake, this is simply another proof of the fraudulent actions such organizations believe they can take. How on earth is is possible to get on a 4min call with a patient, not ask a single question and then send a $345 bill??How does this doctor even decide on this cost? Did he look at the price of the new car he wanted and then checked how much he should charge for the next few bills??Honestly, there is no industry as broken as this one.Imaging going to the hairdresser, asking how much the price is, they reply that it is $80 and the next day you get a $345 bill from them. And please note: this was a 4min video call!!!!!!!It really makes me mad because such organizations allow such “doctors” to do anything they want, but it’s not called fraud because it’s done in a medical environment. These people don’t care about a patient’s medical conditions… this doctor didn’t ask me a single thing about my asthma or other symptoms…He probably just tries to schedule as many of these 4 min video calls as he can in an hour to send out his $345 bills.Did I get anything out of this call? No! The only thing I have been told was to get a nasal spray that doesn’t help.So not only didn’t I get any help but I now have to pay $345 for it??????
UCLA Health is well organized and staffed with the highest caliber doctors. Information is easily shared as well. Great experience with them.
